A few summers ago in a North Carolina backyard, I learned printmaking. A dear friend shared her knowledge and cutting tools as I carved my first woodblock. We pulled the first prints a few hours later with black ink, rice paper, and a spoon. I loved the feel of the work and when the paper pulled from the block the first time revealing a generic cityscape, I was hooked. I got my own cutting tools a few days later and the rest is history.
I like the design, thoughtfulness, and calm involved with making prints and the challenge to communicate a complex idea in a simple medium. This type of art is long lasting because of its simplicity. They make a statement in any room without being loud which somehow makes them universally appealing.
